Will my insurance cover this?

Most comprehensive and collision policies cover post-accident towing as part of the claim. Call your insurer right after the tow; they will reimburse or pay direct. We give you a detailed invoice with the scene location, reason for the tow, and destination, exactly what adjusters need.

How do winch-outs work?

When a vehicle slides off the road, the operator uses the wrecker's integrated winch to pull it back onto the pavement. On a soft shoulder that takes 15-30 minutes. A vehicle deep in a low-water crossing or hung up on a steep gravel-road embankment takes careful anchor work and rigging, sometimes 1-2 hours. Ask them to explain what they see and what they plan to do before they start.

What happens if I break down at the diverging diamond or another confusing interchange?

The Jane Byrne Interchange is where the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan and the Eisenhower all meet, and it catches drivers out every day of the week. Neither it nor most tollway ramps give you a wide shoulder to work from safely. IDOT runs an Emergency Traffic Patrol on the Chicago-area expressways, the crews known as the Minutemen, and they clear hazards and restore traffic flow rather than repairing or towing your car. Stay belted, hazards on, and call us.

Do you coordinate with IDOT and local police?

The network covers freeway recovery across the metro, including the Jane Byrne Interchange and the tollway system. Be clear on which kind of call you have: a police-ordered tow inside the city goes to a City of Chicago pound, and in a suburb it goes to that village's own impound, and in neither case do you pick the company. Once the vehicle is released, or if the tow was never police-ordered, call us and we line up an operator for the destination you choose.

What do I need to do at the scene?

If everyone is safe, step off the road, call 911 if it is a collision, and then call us. Do not try to move the vehicle yourself. Do not stand in traffic to take photos. The operator will arrive, stage the vehicle safely, and help you coordinate with law enforcement, the insurance company, and the body shop.
